Dr. Fernando Koch is a technologist and research leader working to advance Computational Intelligence, Collaboration Technologies, and Distributed Computing. He comes from a start-up background where one is constantly challenged by real-world, end-to-end demands requiring coding, architecture, pre-sales, business development, product management, and more. He is a hands-on innovator, with a deep understanding about the application of AI, Data Science, and Cloud Computing in practical solutions for real-world problems.

He is a former Director of Research at Samsung Research, Research Scientist at IBM Research, and Visiting Professor at Korea University. His achievements have been recognized with the Eisenhower Fellowship, Australian Endeavour Executive Fellowship, Brazilian Research Council Productivity in Research Award.

He holds a PhD in Computer Sciences from Utrecht University with thesis around Distributed AI and Mobile Computing.

Academic & Research

The integrating theme of my research is the construction of adaptive, distributed, and intelligent information systems, able to support decision-making in collaborative settings. These include, for example, the utilization of Social Computing and Distributed Computing in projects for Collaborative Parking, Smart Cities, and Intelligent Citizen Sensors. My research interests include:

  • Computation Intelligence

  • Collaborative AI

  • Recommendation Systems

  • Distributed Computing

Moreover, I am interested in projects around Smart Education and AI for Social Good, which I have worked with in the past.
